Robert Chieves

d. February 3, 2011

CHIEVES, ROBERT EARL "R.E." 93, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully on February 3, 2011. Robert Chieves, fondly known as "R.E.," was born May 4, 1917 in Cleburne County, Alabama, the first-born and last surviving child of Homer Russell and Ida Hicks Chieves. He grew up and lived most of his life in Birmingham. R.E., a beloved son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, was predeceased in 1991, by the love of his life and wife of 53 years, Dorothy Moncrief Chieves and, in 2002, by his second wife, Annie Peek Chieves. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Albert and Donna Chieves of Birmingham and Scott and Kate Chieves of Prattville. He is survived by two granddaughters and two grandsons: Joanna Waggoner and her husband Tim of Golden, Colorado; Tessa Chieves of Concrete, Washington; Marshall Chieves and Will Chieves of Prattville. He is also survived by great-grandsons Benjamin and Oliver Waggoner. He leaves many nieces and nephews, the children and grandchildren of his late brother and sisters and their spouses: Charles and Frances Chieves, Bobbie and William Lee, Virginia and Maurice Wald. Before serving his country during World War II, R.E. and Dot lived for a while in Orange, Texas, both working at Consolidated Steel Corporation's war-time shipyard on the construction of United States Navy vessels. Drafted into the United States Army, he proudly served with the Corps of Engineers in India and Burma on civil engineering projects related to troop transport. He was a master craftsman and home-builder, working most of his life in Birmingham and its over-the-mountain suburbs, much of that time with family members: first with his father, then with his brother and later with a nephew. He loved nothing more than tinkering in his workshop, creating heirlooms for himself and others. He and Dot worshipped for many years and served their Lord in many leadership capacities at Parkview Baptist Church and Berney Points Baptist Church, both in Birmingham. He later attended LifeChurch Birmingham with Annie. There he served as handyman with that church's pre-school program and enjoyed seeing the students and learning of their progress and day-toA/day activities. Graveside services will be held on Monday, February 7, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Trussville with Pastor Tim Mills officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the service time. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that memorials be sent to LifeChurch Birmingham, 5567 Chalkville Road, Birmingham, AL 35235 or the Building Fund of First Presbyterian Church, Prattville, 211 South Chestnut Street, Prattville, Al 36067.
