Dorothy Holmes

Dorothy Beatrice Hammett Hite Crawford Holmes, age 99, of Birmingham, passed away May 1, 2020. She graduated from Ragland High School, and South Highland School of Nursing. Dorothy worked for approximately 42 years most as a surgical nurse. Last and longest employer was East End Hospital, Medical Center East and now St. Vincent’s East. She organized the move of the surgical suite from the old location in East Lake to the current location when it opened. She was a proud Christian and member of Center Point First Baptist Church from 1956 until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents George Samuel and Zora May Davis Hammett, siblings Samuel Winfred Hammett, Roberta Hammett, Owen Hammett, Christine Hammett McCormick Cramer, Lawrence Paul Hammett, husbands Thomas Elam Homes, Robert Lee “Jack” Crawford, and Harold E. Hite, Sr., son Thomas Elam Holmes Jr. and great granddaughter Mia Hite. She is survived by her children Brenda Faye Hite Cash (Walter), Harold Eugene Hite Jr. (Donna), Christie Leigh Crawford Mason (Mike), step daughter in law Charlene Hood Holmes (Tommy), grandchildren Lyn Cash Stone (Rock), Michele Cash, Brian Hite (Jenny),  Preston Hite (Janelle), Jennifer Hawkins Atkins (Victor), Jessica Mason Hussey (Marc), Hannah Mason Cooper (Clint), Leah Mason, Mike Holmes (Jan), Scott Holmes (Melissa), great grandchildren Jeremiah Stone (Allison), Shawn Stone (Aislinn), Necole Stone Hagood (Mitchell), Evan Hite, Logan Hite, Owen Hite, Nathan Hite, Karis Hite, Victor Atkins, Ella Fair Atkins, Archer Atkins, Caleb Hussey, Mason Hussey, Jacob Hussey, Dayleigh Cooper, Sara Clinton Cooper, Reagan Holmes, Zachary Holmes, Clay Holmes, great great grandchildren Raedan Tankersley, Lana Tankersley, Cheyenne Stone, Davinee Stone, Gavin Stone, numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be on Tuesday, May 5, at 11am with burial at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Memorials may be made to the MS Society (205)879-8881.
