Charles “Charlie” Houston Richards, Age 91, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on August 5, 2020 from COVID 19. Coach Charlie and/or Dr. Richards as he was known to many was an award-winning High School Football Coach in the 1950s and 1960s winning several State Championships at Tarrant High School where he went on to become Principal in the 1980s and retired as Interim Superintendent at Tarrant City Schools in 1990s. In the mid-1960s, Charles Richards was an assistant Coach at Alabama under Paul “Bear” Bryant. He recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the Alabama Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
He was a Graduate of Livingston University, received his Master of Education degree at Vanderbilt University and his Doctorate of Education from the University of Alabama.
A graveside Funeral Service will be held on August 8, 2020 at 9:00 am at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, Alabama (Love Garden) where he will be laid to rest.
He will join his late wife of over fifty years, Shirley Ann Richards. He is survived by his son Charles Houston Richards, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia and his daughter, Terri McSweeney Atkinson of Trussville, Alabama and his son-in-law, Wayne Atkinson. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Stacy Wooten and her husband Keith, Stephanie Wilkerson and her husband, Tyler and Daly Green and her husband, Derek. He is also survived by his long-time girlfriend, Connie Thomas as well as five great grandchildren.
