Charles Herring

d. January 5, 2013

Charles William (Bill) Herring, 86, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 5, 2013. "Big Daddy", as he was called by his family, was born and raised in Birmingham, graduating from Woodlawn High School, and made Birmingham his home after serving in the Navy during World War II. Bill was employed by South Central Bell for 39 years, serving in a variety of management positions. After retiring, Bill, who wasn't one for sitting still, began a second career with R-Tech in sales and traveled the United States. Bill was known by all of his friends as an avid outdoorsman, and he hunted and fished most of his life. He was a loving husband, Dad, "Big Daddy", and friend to many. His technical ability and love of all "gadgets" was a source of amusement and pride to his family. Bill's love of the outdoors and his family were central in his life. Bill and his beloved Sadie moved to Saint Martins in the Pines during 2012 as his health began to decline. For the love and dedication of the care staff at St. Martins, we will always be grateful. Bill, or "Big Daddy", is survived by his wife of over 68 years, Sadie; his sister, Dorothy; daughter, Cheryl Martin and her husband, Alan; son, David; and loving grandchildren, Ryan, Lindsey and her husband Tal; Molly, and Alex; and great grandchild, Parker. Letting Bill go is difficult for us all but made easier by the certainty of our faith and understanding that he is now with our heavenly Father. Our special times together and many happy memories will now sustain us all and bring a smile to our faces and joy to our hearts. The funeral service will be held at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 12:00 noon in the chapel, with visitation from 11:00 AM until the service begins. The family requests that any memorial gifts be made to the charity of your choice in Bill's name. God is good and his grace is amazing. We thank Him for our time with our "Big Daddy".
