Wilma Irene Gamble Pennington died Sunday, January 7, 2018, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was born October 3, 1926, in Columbus, Mississippi, to parents, Zelma Gibson Gamble and William Jackson Gamble. She was preceded in death by her brothers, R. Roy Gamble and William Lee Gamble, and her two sisters, Dorothy Zablocki and Jean Holmes as well as her daughter, Edna Claire Pennington. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. William Scott Pennington, Jr. and John Milton Pennington, both of Birmingham, Alabama; and five grandsons - Dr. William Scott Pennington III, Dr. James Gibson Pennington, Thomas Wilson Pennington, John Tyler Pennington, and Clayton Alexander Pennington. She also is survived by 4 great-grandsons. Mrs. Pennington grew up in Weir, Mississippi, attended Weir Consolidated School and then received a degree from Holmes Junior College (Mississippi) and later attended Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi.
Mrs. Pennington resided in Athens, Alabama, before her move to Birmingham. She had been employed at Calhoun Community College (Decatur) for a number of years before retirement. She was also a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church before becoming an active member of the First Baptist Church in Athens. She had been a member of the Huntsville Chapter of PEO International (an educational organization which primarily sponsors women's scholarship), the Athenian Study Club and various social organizations. In addition, her interests included reading, searching for and collecting Indian arrowheads in the Tennessee River Valley area, cooking, watching sports and playing bridge. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and lover of all things AUBURN, notably attending home Auburn football games for many seasons with her dear friend, Eunice Hutchinson. And, as she often noted, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in her memory to:
