William “Bill” Read Glass, 85, of Trussville, AL passed away on January 31st, 2024 at home with family by his side.
Bill was born on December 26th, 1938 to Marvin and Kossie Glass of Anniston. Bill graduated from Anniston High School in 1957 and was active in the Civil Air Patrol. Bill went on to study electrical engineering at Auburn University. Bill was an engineer at Alabama Power in various capacities for 38 years. He was an integral part in the creation of the Alabama Line Location Center (811 - Call Before You Dig) and was president until his retirement in 1996.
Bill had a passion for amateur radio (K4DOY) and electronics. He was also very involved in metal detecting and treasure hunting. He was a member of Huffman Baptist Church for many years where he served as a deacon.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kossie M Buckelew of Oneonta, AL. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Phillips Glass; daughter Kim Eads (Kerry); son (Ret.) Lt. Col. Darryl Glass; son Gary Glass (Mandy). Grandchildren Dr. Matthew Smith (Virginia), Adam Smith (Brittany), Daniel Smith (Kaylyn), Gordon Eads (Kristen), Zachary Eads, Amber Thackerson (Reid), Bradley Glass (Taylor), and Garrett Glass. He also had 8 great grandchildren (and one on the way). He is also survived by his brother-in-law Hal Buckelew of Oneonta, AL and multiple nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to an Alzheimer’s research organization of your choice. Visitation will be Monday February 5th from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside service to follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.
