William “Bill” Joseph Cherry passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the age of 83. He was born August 9, 1941 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Tucumcari High School and Eastern New Mexico University, and served in the United States Army.
He is cherished and deeply loved by his family and friends. William is survived by his two sons, Sean J. Cherry (Enid) and Shannon K. Cherry, granddaughters Kyla Cherry and Ashlyn Cherry, brother Mike Cherry (Barbara) of Tucumcari, NM, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Bill is preceded in death by his parents Alexander and Peg Cherry, his wife Reba Cherry and his siblings, Nancy, Alex and David.
He was a strong believer in Jesus and a committed servant of God. He served faithfully throughout his years in numerous capacities of church life, ranging from board treasurer to parking lot director. He retired as a supervising director from AT&T, and continued working for many years among dear friends at Lowe’s.
He loved serving his community and was a member of several organizations including Pioneers of America, NRA, and the American Legion. Bill also served many years as a sign language interpreter in the deaf and deaf-blind communities of Albuquerque, NM.
William had a gift for never meeting a stranger. His love for family and friends was deeply felt, appreciated and will be sincerely missed by those blessed to be in his circle.
Since the arrival of his first granddaughter in 2003, Bill was also affectionately known as “Pops” and was a faithful and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was known by those around him for his warmth, kindness, integrity, generosity and work ethic. Bill was a consistent example of “going above and beyond” to help others, and was an inspiration to many.
A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens
in Trussville, AL with visitation from 11 to noon and a service immediately following at 12pm.
