Wanda Waid Powell, of Adamsville and resident of Fair Haven, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013. She was born February 22, 1929, in Albertville to Berthelle Smith Waid and Onnis George Waid, a Methodist minister for over 40 years. While her father was a pastor in Langdale, she met Ralph Marshall Powell, a Marine Veteran of WWII and future Methodist minister, and they married in November 1948. Together, they raised two children, Marsha Dawn and Richard Waid, and served numerous churches through his ministry, her beautiful piano playing, and their love of their church families and the communities in which they lived. She made many life-long friends at Lake Highlands UMC, where she worked as church secretary for many years. She never complained about her condition. She fought long and hard, until her body could simply take no more. Wanda is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by one sibling Mary Onnis Waid, daughter and son-in-law Marsha and Buddy Self, son and daughter-in-law Richard and Daphne Powell, granddaughters Wendy Q. (Ric) Stewart and Lynn Q. (Adam) Joiner, nephew Glenn Waid Simon and niece Cynthia Jane Copper, seven great grandchildren: Caitlyn, Erynn, and Evan Joiner and Powell, Laura Leigh, Chloe, and Emily McCormick, plus many other extended family members and friends. Special thanks to the staff of Fair Haven, Rev. Belinda Wilson, Brother Ed Swenson, Larry and Abigail Neal, and the countless church groups and members for their numerous expressions of love and support. Visitation will be Monday, December 2, 2013, at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home from 11-12:00 PM.
