Magel, Walter Frederick Jr., age 89, of Birmingham passed away April 10, 2009. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor which brightened everyone's day. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Sarah and Walter Frederick Magel Sr. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Lauck Magel and his brother Wilbert Magel.
Walter's family moved to Memphis, TN, where he attended the Memphis State Teacher's College. He then attended the University of Alabama and graduated with a degree in metallurgy. Walter worked at the American Radiator Company, Republic Steel, and the Pfaudler Company in Elyria, Ohio. He worked for Republic Steel from 1955 i�½" 1983. Walter and his family relocated to Birmingham in 1961. After Republic Steel, he worked for Thrifty Steel.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Parker Magel; daughter, Nancy Harper (Larry); son, Walter Magel III; sister, Jean Chapman of Palm Springs, CA; and brother, Robert Magel of Elyria, Ohio; grandsons, David (Laura), Brian, and Jeffrey (Britt) Harper; grand-daughter Christine Harper and great-grand-daughter, Lillian Harper; step-daughters Cherryl (John Hawkins) Hardy, Julia (Gary) Shook, Lucy (Eddie) Curran, and Laura (David) Cline; step-grandson, Lane Shook; step grand-daughters, Amy (Robert) Hilton and Jamie Shook and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on Monday, April 13 at 2:00 pm.
