Walter P. Johnson, Sr. passed away peacefully on March 17, 2011 at the age of 69 after a courageous battle with cancer. Always ready with a joke or funny story, he was beloved by his family and many friends. Originally from San Antonio, TX, Walter moved to Birmingham many years ago, where he worked for Spring Air and was known affectionately as "The Mattress Man". He loved his work and often said he would work until the grave; he almost made it. He also loved to fish, play games, follow sports, and interact with others; he was a true "people person" who made friends easily. Of course, the greatest love of his life was his high school sweetheart, Judy, with whom he recently shared their 50th wedding anniversary. Walter is survived by his wife Judy and their three children: Walter "Perry" Johnson, Jr. (Arden), Stephanie Macakanja (Michael), Bill Johnson (Tina) and by six grandchildren: Christian, Schuyler, Kate, Bella, Remli, Raef, as well as one brother C.H. Johnson, Jr. Walter was a faithful member and deacon at Crosspoint Baptist Church where the funeral services will be held on Monday, March 21 at 2 p.m. with visitation at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Crosspoint Building Fund.
