Wallace Cardwell

September 16, 1935 — August 11, 2019

The woods have quieted, the creeks are calmer, the rivers stiller, and the fish will not bite the same from the Smokey Mountains to the banks of the Cahaba River. Nature has lost a true friend. Wallace Jim Cardwell, 83, died August 11, 2019 after a long battle with lung disease. He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Todd Cardwell.  He leaves his beautiful wife of 63 years, Barbara Cardwell; his daughters Tammy Hawkins (Randy Todd Hawkins) and Lisa Dawn McGrath (James McGrath); his siblings Gerald Cardwell (Linda Cardwell), Brenda Friedman (Fred Friedman), and Sharon Venz; His grandchildren Ashley Hawkins Smith, Tim Hawkins, Lily McGrath, Mary Ava McGrath, Peter McGrath, Sarah Anne McGrath and a great grandchild, Leland Hawkins; and many nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Jefferson County, the son of William and Gladys Cardwell. Graduated from Leeds High school. Wallace served in the United States Navy and retired from work from Precision Grinding after 30 years of service. Mr. Cardwell conquered his passion for fishing by winning multiple awards, including 2 state records for largest red eye bass. He was an excellent fly fisherman, an avid turkey hunter, and an outdoor craftsman. Wallace loved nature, but he lived for his family. He spent time wisely, camping and spending summers in the Smokey Mountains, where he instilled life lessons in his grandchildren. He was a great storyteller and an honest listener. A funeral service will be held at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens on Thursday, August 15th, 2019. The visitation will begin at 9:00 am and the funeral will be held at 10:00 am.
