Steven Donald Lawrence, born April 11, 1949, went to join family and friends in heaven on July 30, 2024. Steve was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and spent childhood years in Illinois and New York before the family settled in Birmingham, Alabama. Participation in the Boy Scouts as a youth, where he achieved the rank of Life, as well as family camping trips and weekends at their river cabin, nurtured a love of nature and the outdoors that extended into a lifelong love of hiking. Steve graduated from Berry High School and from the University of Montevallo, where he participated in the theater. He was a familiar voice on Birmingham's WAPI Radio for many years. He then shifted occupations to become Building Manager for Huffman United Methodist Church, from which he reluctantly retired... twice.
Steve was a member of Huffman United Methodist Church for 35 years, the Phoenix Sunday School class, the Holy Smokers barbecue group, and the church book club. He loved visiting national parks and particularly relished trips to the Great Smoky Mountains with family. He was an avid reader, especially of science fiction and the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. He loved the pets he had throughout his life, especially his faithful companion, Maggie. He loved to cook out on his grill and was famous for his country style ribs. He will be remembered by family and friends for his sense of humor, his eagerness to always lend a helping hand, and his resonant speaking voice. He loved to share his voice talent by providing readings in special church services.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Loris Lawrence and one sister, Diane Hayes Koberstein. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ellen Scott Lawrence; his sister, Marcia Lawrence VanTassel; his children Andy Lawrence (Jenni), John Natale, Sam Moseley, and Crissy Natale (Jonathan Pipkin); his grandchildren, Eli Moseley, Silas Moseley, Annalise Pipkin, and Tristram Pipkin; beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews; and many true friends.
The family extends their gratitude to the caring team at DaVita Springs Dialysis of Trussville. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Huffman United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at Huffman United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 10th at 2:00pm. The family welcomes visitors prior to the service at 1:00pm.
