On Oct. 23,2017 Ruth Elaine Shuey, age 94, went to be with her Lord. Ruth, known to her grandchildren and many as "Mimi" was the true matriarch of our family. From her we learned how to laugh at ourselves, be stubborn - especially when we think we are right, open our home and heart to others, and persevere with grace. Ruth Elaine Bell, the youngest child of John and Frances Bell, was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and was working at Birmingham Electric (Alabama Power) when she met the love of her life Charles "Chuck" Shuey. They were married for 57 years until his death in 2002. Last year she endured the death of her oldest son, Randy, and never seemed to recover from that terrible blow. Ruth is survived by her children Janet Hamm (Jim), Valerie Nichols (Terry), and beloved son Dennis. Her special joy was her grandchildren Heather Reeves (Brett), Hilaria Rogers, Seth Hamm (Leigh), Jessica Leach (Jason), and Daniel Shuey. She delighted in great grandchildren Madison Reeves, Matthew Reeves, Taylor Norsworthy (Brandon), Dillon Rogers, Ben Rogers, Ethan Hamm, Libby Jane Hamm, Autumn Leach, Tristan Leach, and Arianna Leach. In later years she was ecstatic that she was blessed with great-great grandchildren Brody Norsworthy and Ryder Norsworthy. Ruth was preceded in death by her siblings Victor Bell, Frances Wiggins, Dorothy Buzbee and Anna Pack. She created a true extended family and touched many lives - nieces, nephews, cousins, and others that were not even related. From an early age she considered Connie McClelland and Nancy Johnson her sisters and Mary Bell her other daughter. Later Rita Shuey and Sandy Quinn became part of our extended family. Ruth Shuey loved the Lord and was a charter member of both Centercrest Baptist Church and North Clay Baptist. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 5 to 7 PM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be on Friday at 10:30 AM in the chapel and the burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. Rev. Tim Evans will be officiating over the services.
Heaven has truly received an angel, but watch out - she is a little feisty.
