Russell Haynes

Dr. Russell Nesbit Haynes (Russ) of Birmingham passed away peacefully in his home on October 1, 2008 at the age of 72. Russell was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 23, 1936 the son of Emma Louise Welton and Russell James Haynes. His father was a graduate of the University of Iowa. His mother graduated from Northwestern University. Dr. Haynes spent the majority of his youth living in Michigan where their father worked in manufacturing building B-24 Bombers during WWII and spent the last 41 years of his life with The Ford Motor Company.

Dr. Haynes was influenced by the support of devoted and caring grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles who were the foundation for his strength in character, patriotism, compassion for others and strong family devotion which he displayed throughout his life. He always credited family for his spiritual devotion, strong work ethic and for his academic success as well as his professional and personal achievements. In his youth he was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout, attended the Edgar A. Guest Elementary school and graduated from Dearborn High School in Dearborn, MI where he became a student of history with an affinity for the arts. He studied English, History and pre-med. He graduated in 1958 with a B.A. from The University of Michigan and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity. Immediately after graduation, Russ moved to Birmingham to begin Medical School in pursuit of his career as a Neurological Surgeon. On September 4, 1959 Dr. Russell Haynes married his loving wife of 49 years, Sandra Fay Davis, who was an R.N. from Baptist Hospital. He graduated in 1963 with his M.D. from the Medical College of Alabama. Dr. Haynes along with Sandra and son, Greg moved to Dearborn for his internship and eventually as a neurosurgery resident at the Henry Ford Hospital where their second son, Brad was born. In 1966 at the age of 30, Dr. Haynes received his draft notice and was inducted into the Navy and trained in Annapolis. As a Naval Lieutenant, he was assigned to the USS Holland - a Polaris Missile Submarine Tender in Rota, Spain as the Submarine Squadron Physician. He completed his military service stationed in Charleston, SC with his family. After the Navy, Dr. Haynes moved his family back to Birmingham to join his uncle Dr. Walter Haynes to begin his professional career in private practice as Neurological Surgeon at BMC-Princeton. From 1970 - 1998 Dr. Russell Haynes was devoted to the health needs of his patients and the well-being of their families. He enjoyed life and traveled to destinations around the world with his wife, Sandra and close friends. He was a generous father; a loving grandfather and a positive influence to others. He was a passionate Alabama Football fan and loved golf. He was also the #1 fan at all of his children's and grandchildren's sporting events.

Dr. & Mrs. Haynes are both Life Members of the Baptist Hospitals Foundation for services and lifetime contributions. Dr. Russell N. Haynes is preceded in death by: Grandparents - Grace and Paul Nesbit of Blairsville, PA Grandparents - Walter and Jesse Bogle of Ottawa, Ill Parents - Emma Louise Welton and Russell James Haynes of Dearborn, MI. Uncle - Dr. Walter George Haynes of Birmingham, AL. Brother - Richard Paul Haynes of Indianapolis, IN.

He is survived by Sandra Davis Haynes, his wife of 49 years; Sons: Gregory Russell Haynes (Phyllis) and Bradley Wayne Haynes (Lucie); Grandchildren: Alexander Drennen Haynes, Gregory Russell Haynes, Jr., Bradley Wayne Haynes, Jr., Ann Chapman Haynes, Davis McKee Haynes & William Corley Haynes; First cousin: Walter George Haynes, III - and many nieces, nephews and close friends.
