Ruby Gwendolyn “Gwen” Burton, 92, of Clay, passed away on March 5, 2024.
Gwen was born on April 19, 1931, to Lacy Bob and Grace Wood in Jefferson County, AL. She
met Ted Burton at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham and they married on January 28,
1950, during their senior year. They remained lovingly married 74 years until her death.
Gwen dedicated her life to her family, serving as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. For
27 years, she also played a crucial role in administration of the family electric business. She and
Ted were longtime members of Center Point Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her
devotion to her family and the inspiring example she and Ted set as partners, parents,
grandparents, and Christians.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Lacy Bob and Grace Wood; brothers Charles
Wood and Jack Wood; and sister Barbara Harlow. She is survived by her husband, Ted; two
sons, Robert (Connie) Burton and Larry (Sharon) Burton; four grandchildren, Jimmy (Heather)
Burton, April (Scott) Weed, Daniel (Meg) Burton, and Matthew Burton; and several
great-grandchildren.
A private visitation will be held at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville. The graveside
service will be held on March 9, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the Atonement Garden section at
Jefferson Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to
the Youth Ministry at First Baptist Church of Pinson.
