Rodney Self

September 3, 1945 — February 1, 2021

On February 1, 2021, we lost the love of our lives, Rodney Wayne Self, age 75. Upon being admitted to the hospital, he told his wife, “Some think I won’t make it, but either way I win.” His faith was strong, and we know he sits at the feet of Jesus now. Originally from Clay, Alabama, Rodney grew up in a loud, loving family. After attending Hewitt Trussville High School, he was employed by Alabama Power Company for 45 years, retiring in 2010. Many business associates became close, personal friends during that time. Rodney had the kindest temperament, rarely speaking ill of anyone. His sweet disposition hid a funny and prankster side, loving a good-natured joke, told or played. An avid golfer, he was a member of Ballantrae Golf Club, playing as often as possible with his golf buddies and making trips to other courses any chance he got. Earlier in his spiritual journey, he was an active deacon at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Center Point, where he raised his two sons. He and his wife, Debbie, are members of Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover, where they are blessed to be connected with a small group that includes many dear friends. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Garrard Self; two sons: Brett (Kristi) and Kenny (Jackie); five amazing grandsons: Gage, Jordan, Brady, Caden and Korey; and one precious granddaughter, Stella; three sisters: Jane Jones (Paul), Elaine Self and Dede Wood (Greg), and a multitude of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Jim Self; and three brothers: Jimmy, B.W. and Jerry. Services will be held at Hunter Street Baptist Church in the Chapel, 2600 Johns Hopkins Parkway, Hoover on Friday, February 5, 2021, with visitation at 11:00 a.m. and a celebration of life at noon. Friends are welcomed, masks are required and please practice social distancing. Graveside services will be held at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Trussville for family and close personal friends only. The family wishes to thank all of the prayer warriors who have lifted Rodney up during his last days, and the CCU2 and Palliative Care Teams at Brookwood Hospital. We request donations be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Rodney Self.
