Mr. Robert Hilton Sykes, age 89 of Trussville went to be with the Lord on Father's Day, Sunday June 21, 2009. Mr. Sykes is a veteran of World War II serving in the Naval Air corps for four years. He is retired from Stockham Valves and Fittings after working there for 44 years. He was an active member of the Trussville Civitan club serving at one time as president. He has been a member of Trussville First United Methodist church for 53 years serving as a Sunday School teacher, helping to establish the church library, and changing the outdoor sign board weekly for 17 years. Mr. Sykes is survived by his wife of 63 years Mary Frances; daughter Barbara Colby (Richard), son Bobby Sykes (Joyce); 2 grandsons Greg Colby (Gina) and Michael Colby (Erica); 3 great granddaughters Madison, Haley, and Sarah; 3 sisters, Helen Greenlee, Vira Kennedy (Glenn) and Norma Roberts and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Sykes was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by everyone. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 24 at 9:30 AM at Trussville First United Methodist church with Church services beginning at 10:30 AM with Bro. Don Mauldin officiating and burial to follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Trussville First United Methodist Church or the Trussville Paramedics who graciously helped Mr. Sykes numerous times.
