Robert Mitchell

Robert McKinley "Bob" Mitchell, Jr. passed away on May 12, 2015. He was a man of great faith and at the age of 93, he now joins his infant daughter, Jerry Diane, who died shortly after her birth. He is also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Marian Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Willette Lowe Mitchell, after 73 years of a loving marriage. Bob and Willette were married in 1942 after their graduations from Sheffield High School. He is also survived by his sons, Robert Lowe Mitchell and David Gaylord Mitchell (Beverly); daughter, Diana Gail Mitchell Armstrong (Terrell); seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Bob served proudly in the Eight Air Force 384th Bomb Group in England, completing over 35 missions as a crew chief and ball turret gunner on B-17 bombers. His decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and European Theater Medal with Five Bronze Stars. After the war, Bob completed his education with degrees from the University of North Alabama and Vanderbilt University. His broad career included positions as: high school teacher, Boy Scout Executive, hospital administrator, construction estimator and manager, and insurance safety engineer. He was active in veterans' organizations; he was an Eagle Scout and scout master, and a squadron commander with Civil Air Patrol. He was a devoted Christian, teaching and leading by example in Church of Christ churches' in Sheffield, Albertville and Pell City; and serving as Elder for Huffman and Trussville congregations. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 14th at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 15th at 3:00 p.m. The burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16th at Oakwood Cemetery in Sheffield, AL. David Mitchell and Lloyd Beard are officiating over the services.
