Robert Clark "Bob" Kontzen died Monday, March 13, 2017 He was born June 11, l938, in Birmingham, AL and retired from the Social Security Administration with over 32 years' service. Bob attended Barrett Elementary School and graduated from Woodlawn High School where he was a member of the Top Hatters, Warblers Club, Ushers Club, ROTC, and Euclidean Honor Society. While at Woodlawn, he and Warbler friends, Fred Rushing, Jack Pyle, and George King, formed The Gospel Teens Quartet touring North Alabama rural churches as well as several local venues. Bob served 2 years active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a radioman aboard the supply ship, U.S.S. Denebola, making frequent cruises from Norfolk, VA, to the Mediterranean. At Bainbridge, MD, during basic training, he was in the base choir and on the precision drill team. At Birmingham-Southern College, Bob earned a B.A. degree in History/Political Science. He was also a two-term vice-president of Alpha Tau Omega, and his wife, Pam, was fraternity Sweetheart his senior year. They married on March 16, 1963, at East Lake United Methodist Church. An active member of Huffman United Methodist Church for over 32 years, Bob sang in the choir and his beautiful voice will be well-remembered. Pam often accompanied him on the piano. Bob, also, was honored to sing on CDs, at a number of weddings and funerals at his church and a few others. He held various leadership positions on the Administrative Board., was a delegate to the North Alabama conference for several years and taught the Threshold Sunday School Class for over 30 years. His friendly personality, endearing nature and strength of character will be missed by all who knew him. He was predeceased by his parents, James M. and Lois Turner Kontzen, and his dear sister, Dorothy Jean (Dottie) Kontzen Walker. Bob is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years, Pamela Lord Kontzen; his greatly beloved sons R. Clark Kontzen, II and wife, Alecia, of Ft. Mill, SC; and Christopher M. Kontzen of Birmingham, AL; his adored grandchildren, Andrew and Ryan Kontzen of Ft. Mill, SC and Audrey Kontzen of Birmingham, AL.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins .His love and goodness will always shine through his family. Bob was a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather and will be missed greatly. He was a good and generous man who touched many lives, and we are thankful for his life. Visitation will be Saturday at 12:00 at Huffman United Methodist Church in the sanctuary san with funeral services at 1:00 HUMC is at 711 Gene Reed Road, Birmingham, AL 35235 and then graveside services at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huffman United Methodist music department.
