Bailey, Phyllis Campbell, 84, of Birmingham, passed away on October 8, 2008, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was a resident of St. Martin's-in-the-Pines at the time of her death. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Albert L. "Al" Bailey, Jr. She is survived by her loving daughters, Janie Bailey Bryant (Hugh) and Trisha Bailey Crawford (Rex); grandchildren, Doug Bryant, Julie Bryant Bush (Corey), Lea Barnes Renfroe (Russell), and Rick Barnes (Stacy) all of the Birmingham area. She was born Phyllis Isabel Campbell on January 5, 1924 in St. John's Newfoundland and raised as a British subject. She met Sergeant Al Bailey at a USO Club dance in 1944 while he was assigned with the U.S. Army Air Corps at Ft. Pepperell in St. Johns. Thus began a life-long romance. They were married at East Lake Methodist Church in 1947. Phyllis became a US citizen in 1950. She never lost her Newfoundland sense of humor, her unique way of expressing herself, and her sense of what was proper. Phyllis was an active member of East Lake United Methodist Church and the Innovators Sunday School Class for over 50 years. She was an active member of Huffman United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School class for the last years of her life. She was an accomplished homemaker and an expert knitter. She and Al lived life to the fullest. They traveled, played bridge, danced, raised a beautiful family, had many friends and supported their community and church. She has already missed for many years by all who knew her. Alzheimer's disease took her but will never take the fond and loving memories of her. Special thanks to the staff at St. Martins-in-the-Pines for their love and care.
