Peggy H. Tucker, age 87, passed serenely in her sleep on January 16, 2025, with her son at her bedside. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, a Phillips High School graduate, she married and later gave birth to her only child.
Peggy was a loving daughter to her parents and mother to her son. As a daughter, Peggy frequently and consistently checked in on her parents, helping them with anything she could, especially as they entered their later years. As a mother, she worked hard to provide the best life she could for her son. The things she did for her family were done, not out of obligation, but because of love.
Peggy was also a devoted and attentive wife to her kind and loving husband, and their partnership exemplified what many strive for and never attain in a marriage.
Peggy went on to become a gentle and caring grandmother and her sweet tea and homemade cornbread are still the standard her grandchildren use as the measuring stick for all others.
Eventually Peggy assumed the role of a patient and doting great-grandmother, never shying away from fun activities with her great-grandchildren, for fear of a mess.
Peggy was a devout Christian and active member of the Huffman Freewill Baptist Church for many, many years. Peggy was a gifted vocalist and talented musician, who played both the piano and organ, and she used her gifts to glorify God, to share Christ’s love, and to spread the Good News. She later touched countless lives by joining with her dear sister and a close friend to form the traveling gospel trio of The Melody Girls, ministering to communities all over the Southeast through song.
Peggy had a successful career in Accounting. She retired from Christian & Small (formerly Rives Peterson) in 2003 after 16 years of employ. At retirement, management commented that her “dedication to her work, her delightful attitude, and her thoughtfulness had made their firm a much better place.”
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents Richard P. and Lois Mildred Hood and by her beloved husband, Billy J. Tucker. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy H. Brasher; by her son, Robert D. Hughes; by her grandchildren, Natalie Hughes and Tim Hughes; and by her great-grandchildren, Ellis Lipp, Talan Hersey, Brennan Benifield, Odin Hughes, Trip Benifield, and Conner Hughes; along with an extended family of her niece and her nephews who frequently cared for her like they would their own mother.
In accordance with Peggy’s wishes, her family has arranged for a small, private funeral at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, Alabama on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at 2:00 PM.
