Paul Marshall

MARSHALL, PAUL E. Paul E. Marshall, 91, of Pinson, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010. He was born April 9, 1919 in Winfield, Alabama. The son of William D. and Smithie Marshall. Paul served in WWII as part of the 460th Amphibious Company. As a corporal he led a DUKW (amphibious truck) unit and was part of the Normandy invasion, landing at Omaha Beach. He also saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and at the Bridge at Remagen. Paul was very proud of his military service, regularly attended his yearly 460th Co. reunions and monthly meetings of the Birmingham Battle of the Bulge veterans. Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Ruth Marshall; sons, J. Wayne Marshall (Judy) of Pinson, P. Frankie Marshall (Linda) of Alabaster, Kenneth R. Marshall (Terri) of Pinson; daughter, Kathy M. Wynn (Mike) of Pinson; grandchildren, Jerry Marshall, Jill Riddle, Brittany Pickett, Shane Wynn, Kevin Wynn, and Kaleb Wynn; great-grandsons, Derek Marshall and Brett Marshall; great-granddaughters, Rylan Pickett and Jordyn Riddle; brothers, Thomas W. Marshall of Pinson, Terry D. Marshall of Hoover and stepbrother, David Earl Nicholson of Winfield; sisters, Willie Lee Hollis of Winfield, Mattie Lou "Tootsie" Coker of Birmingham, and Betty Sue Moore of Winfield. Many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Glenn Marshall, Joe Mac Marshall, James "Buster" Marshall, Johnny Marshall and stepbrother Billy Gene Nicholson; sister, Ester Ulmer; stepmother, Catherine Marshall; and parents. Paul attended Winfield High School where he excelled in baseball and as a miler in track. He and his brothers played several years on the City of Winfield men's baseball team. He continued to play baseball after the war and later softball, which he played competitively into his 70s. He enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and Crimson Tide football. Paul worked as a steel press operator and retired from Joslyn Mfg. Co. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 1, 2010 at noon at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Trussville. Rev. Chase Thompson and Rev. David McConnell officiating. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
