Opal Reid Cox McCollum, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, surrounded by her family. She passed peacefully under the care of hospice. Opal was born on October 13, 1930, in Hayden, Alabama and later made her home in Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husbands Alvin C. Cox and Mac McCollum, parents Eugene and Myrtle Reid, sisters Faye Reid, Margie Reid Green Rogers, and brother Jimmie Reid. Survivors include daughters Diane Cox Young of Florence, Alabama, Becky Cox Dailey (Gary) of Tupelo, Mississippi, Tamie Cox Nelson (Billy) of Destin, Florida, son Brad McCollum (Deanna) of Morris, Alabama; nine grandchildren, Micah Douthit (Todd), Sara Saxton (Will), Ty Young (Samantha), Andrew Dailey (Sarah), Blakelee Woods (Jarrod), Ashlee Webber, Parker McCollum, Zach Kovacs, Alex Kovacs; ten great grandchildren, sister-in-law Freida Reid, nephew Robert Green, nieces Sheila Crawford and Windy Reid, and many other numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend Wayne Pilkington. Opal was the owner of Cox Day Nursery and Kindergartens for 41 years until she retired. She enjoyed caring for children at her business. Her favorite activities were traveling, decorating, dancing, and spending time at her condo in Destin with family and friends. Opal was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church and also enjoyed attending North Shelby Baptist and Faith Assembly Christian Church. A special thanks to Brookwood Hospital doctors and nurses, Aspire Rehabilitation Facility, Homewatch Caregivers, Synergy HomeCare, and Emerald Coast Hospice. Visitation will be held at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, AL on Friday, April 1, 2016 from 5 until 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, AL on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 12 pm. Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.
