Jewel Novline Fowler Scroggins was born at Wayside, Fayette County, Alabama, to Enoch Talmadge Fowler and Millie Ann May Fowler. She died August 15, 2020, at Cook Springs, Alabama, at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers, three sisters, one grandchild, and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Olson F Scroggins, five children, Linda Vincent (Raymond), Michael Scroggins (Nancy), Donna Abrams, Cathy Gronquist (Mikel), and Brian Scroggins (Barbara), 20 grandchildren, and 49 great-grandchildren.
Mother attended elementary and junior high school at Wayside, and graduated from Winfield High School, where she played on the girls’ basketball team. She continued to play basketball for much of her life, playing on women’s teams in church and community leagues.
In 1948, with help from her brother Ray, she came to Birmingham to attend Birmingham Business College. She graduated May 26, 1950 as a Certified Public Secretary. Along the way she also earned her MRS degree on August 8, 1949.
The rest of her life was focused on her family. Mother was an excellent cook and seamstress, talents which greatly contributed to the quality of life enjoyed by her husband, children, and grandchildren.
