Mathern James Denard (M.J., Denny), age 77 passed away September 5, 2011 and was predeceased by his father, Rev. George Mathern Denard, sisters-in-law Mary, Jenny and Virginia Denard and brother-in-law J.W. Johns. He was an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church, P.C.A. Born in Itawamba County MS, he spent most of his life in Birmingham and Trussville. Mathern served with the U.S. Navy six years, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He retired from Hayes Target Division, having served a total of 40 years with Hayes Targets and Pemco (formerly Hayes Intl. Corp.). Mathern is survived by his dear mother, Rosa Moxley Denard, and beloved wife of 49 years, Bertha Ann Taylor Denard, Trussville and sons James Mark (Stacey), Oxford, GA, David Austin (Susan), Argo, Taylor Andrew (Kimberly) Argo. and nine treasured grandchildren: Cathryn Ann, James Davis, Caroline Rose, Emily Elizabeth, Caleb Austin, Nathan Daniel, Luke David, Rebekah Ashley, and Taylor Andrew, Jr. Also surviving are: sister, Elease Denard Johns, brothers Charles Edward, Carlton Adrian (Judi), Eldon Donald (Martha), Lane Lee (Christina), and Z. Tommy Denard, mother-in-law Clara Kyzer Stoker, sister-in-law, Wanda Taylor Bankson (Levoy), Montevallo, brothers-in-law Dr. L. Roy Taylor (Donna) Jefferson, GA, James F. Stewart, Winona Lake, IN, along with a number of nieces and nephews. He leaves a legacy of love and devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ, an unselfish gift of helps to others and the love of family and friends. The family wishes to express their great appreciation to the Dr. J. Alan Carter and staff of Faith Presbyterian Church, Dr. Jimmie H. Harvey and caring staff and the gracious support of Alacare Hospice. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 from 5-7pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held at Jefferson Memorial Chapel on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 2:00pm. Officiating will be Dr. J. Alan Carter and Rev. Paul L. Bankson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Presbyterian Church, Birmingham. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
