Mary Lou Trimm Smith Segars, Mary Lou passed away on December 30, 2011 of complications following a brief illness. She was a native of Winfield, Alabama, born on May 15, 1927. She was preceded in death by her father, Joel Bankhead Trimm, her mother, Missouri Ethel Estes Trimm, and by her brothers and sisters, Flora Estelle Bostick, Homer Lee Trimm, Ruby Erdeal Perry, Willie Irene Peterson, Comer Alfred Trimm, Joel P. Trimm, Harry Douglas Trimm, and James Earl Trimm. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Roy A. Smith, Jr. and her second husband Thomas Felton Johnson. Mary Lou is survived by her brother, John Quinton Trimm and her sister Edna Marie Wallace. She is also survived by her husband, Henry Segars, her children Sherry (Eddie) Webster, Roy (Susan) Smith, III, Tommy (Kim) Smith, and Jim (Karen) Smith. She had eleven beautiful grandchildren: Blake (Theresa) Webster, Roy Smith, IV, Whitney (Steve) Anderson, Jake Webster, Jimbo Smith, Justin Smith, Haley (Kevin) Dees, Jennifer Smith, Karlee Ledlow, Alexis Smith, and Olivia Smith. Her great-granddaughter, Cline Smith, also survives her. Many beloved nieces and nephews also survive her. Mary Lou grew up in Glen Allen, Alabama and graduated from Winfield High School. After working briefly in Mobile, she moved to Birmingham where she met and married Roy A. Smith, Jr. They lived in the eastern section of Birmingham. Mary Lou and Roy were members of Sixty-Sixth Baptist Church and charter members of South Roebuck Baptist Church. Mary Lou was primarily a homemaker but also assisted Roy in their business, Roy Smith Pharmacy. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. Her smile was contagious. After her children were grown, Mary Lou and Roy decided it was good time for her to learn the game of golf. They enjoyed many years travelling and playing all across the United States. She had three holes in one to her credit. After Roy's death in 1989, she continued to play and developed many close friends at Grayson Valley Country Club and the Women's Alabama Golf Association. She served in many leadership positions in both groups. She was competitive to the core but a lot of fun to play with. During her years at Grayson Valley Country Club, she met and married Thomas Felton Johnson. They enjoyed ten years together prior to Tom's death. She cherished her relationship with Tom's daughters Lisa, Leslie, Lori and Linda and Tom's granddaughters, Sayre, Hannah, and Sophie. In 2005 she married her childhood sweetheart, Henry "Seg" Segars, a retired Methodist minister who served many congregations around the state. They travelled extensively throughout the remainder of her life. Mary Lou is remembered by many personal friends and friends of her children and grandchildren. As one of her family friends said, "She is without a doubt one of the most loved persons I've ever known because she gave her love so freely." Her family would like to express their gratitude for all of the kind thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. One of Mary Lou's favorite quotes was "Let them say on my deathbed, not that they are sorry I died, but rather that they are glad I had lived." Visitation will be at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, AL on Thursday January 5, 2012 from 5-8PM. Mary Lou's funeral service will be held on Friday, January 6th at 2PM at South Roebuck Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.
