Martha Faye Guthrie Wideman

Martha Faye Guthrie Wideman, 92, of Birmingham, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 in Birmingham. She was born on April 20, 1922 in Morris, Alabama. A homemaker for most of her married life, she worked at the shipyards in Tampa, Florida during WWII and also as a hairdresser after the war. She was an active member for many years in Birmingham chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as secretary for many years as well as other offices including Worthy Matron. She was a member of South Avondale Baptist Church until its closing and later Crestway Baptist Church. She enjoyed a special trip to the Holy Land and celebrated her 85th birthday with a cruise to Mexico. She loved University of Alabama football and tried never to miss a televised game. She lived in her own home in Birmingham for over sixty years. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Thomas Bradley Wideman; parents, Martha Ellen Anderson Guthrie and Henry Taylor Guthrie; sisters, Eunice Zelda Guthrie Cates, Mable Hazel Guthrie, Alif Beatrix Guthrie Payne, Maude Odell Guthrie Schmitt; and brother, Hoyle Taylor Guthrie. She is survived by her son, Brad Wideman and daughter-in-law, Kay Calfee Wideman; sister, Mary Eloise Guthrie Cleckler, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. Her son expresses special appreciation to Eva Mostegla who was his mother's care giver during the last year of her life; and to his mother's neighbor and friend, Lee Knox, for his help and presence. A private family interment was held on Saturday, December 27, 2014. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
