Lunette "Lucy" Jones Alford

Lunette "Lucy" Jones Alford, age 93 of Birmingham, AL passed away on July 7, 2015. She was born in Birmingham December 12, 1921 to Annie and Albert Leroy Jones. She was married in San Francisco, CA March 20, 1945 to Dr. A Wade Alford. Together they raised their family in several locations, but finally settled in Birmingham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Alford; her sisters, Dean Peoples, Sally Phillips, and Evelyn Davis, as well as brothers, J.C., Euel and Carmen Jones. She is survived by children: Patricia Alford, Richard Alford, Susan Roach (children Keegan & Sarah Savannah), and John Alford (wife Melody and children Erica, Rebecca, & Wade).

Lucy was a longtime member of the 77th St./Edwards Lake Rd. Church of Christ. She attended the University of Alabama with her sisters and became a physical education teacher. After Wade's death in 1969, she returned to school and began teaching again. She retired from Woodlawn High School, where she worked fulltime until she was 82. She loved to garden, walk (fast) at the old Eastwood Mall, and cheer loudly for Bama Football. She cared for her mother, her brother Carmen, and his wife Gracie. She then traveled to Memphis to care for her sister Teb.

The family wants to thank family friends and caregivers Mary Jean Trone, Tracie Grey, and Peggie Acree. Gentiva Hospice was a Godsend. We couldn't have done it without you.

Services will be held Saturday July 11 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens, on Gadsden Highway in Trussville. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 pm, with service to follow at 3 pm in the chapel, conducted by her nephew Alan Phillips. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to the charity of your choice.
