Lula Delle (Lou) Fancher Smith

Lula Delle (Lou) Fancher Smith, 94 years young, passed away on Saturday, April 19th. She was born in Holcomb, Mississippi to Ruth Brewer Fancher and John Myrick Fancher. She grew up in Coffeeville, Mississippi where she was the Salutatorian of her Coffeeville High School graduating class.

Lou then went to Mississippi Southern College where she was very active on campus during the pursuit of her Home Economics degree. She was selected for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities twice.

Following college, Lou taught high school for a brief time at Laurel High School before beginning work as a Home Demonstration Agent in George County, Mississippi for the Agriculture Extension Service. While in George County she met and married Rayburn Smith, the love of her life.

The family settled in Birmingham in 1958 where Lula Delle was an active member of Huffman Baptist Church since 1959. She and her husband raised their children in the church. Lou was preceded in death by her husband Ray Smith, her parents, and sisters: Mary Alice and Martha Ann.

Lou is survived by her four children: Warren Smith (Trish), Cindy Jesup, Lisa Norris, and Alice Murdoch (Michael); her six grandchildren: Lexie Jesup (Jason Buckley), Derrick Jesup, Aaron Norris (Caroline), Ronnie Norris (Courtney), Steven and Andrew Murdoch; her six great-grandchildren: Emmett and Miles Buckley, Austin and Logan Norris, and Katherine Lou and Jon Norris; her sister Nell McGee (Colon); and a host of nieces and nephews and their families.

Visitation will take place at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home at 1591 Gadsden Highway in Trussville, AL on Tuesday evening, April 22, from 5 pm to 7 pm. Funeral services will take place in the same location the following morning at 10 am. In lieu of flowers please send money to Huffman Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
