Linda Jane "Jane" Kerlin Powell. Jane was born on January 21, 1959 at Carraway Methodist Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama. Jane is survived by her husband, William Gary Powell, Mtn. Brook, AL; stepson, Rainer Powell, Mobile, AL; her mother, Mirriam "Tootie" Kerlin, Mtn. Brook; her three dogs, Glooney, George & Sofie. In addition she is survived by many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her father, William "Bill" L. Kerlin, Mtn. Brook, AL; her sister, Rhonda Sue Kerlin-Kozlowicki, New York, New York, & both sets of grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Harvey James Kerlin, Sr. and Prattville, AL & Mr. & Mrs. N. J. Sullivan, Birmingham, AL.
Jane was baptized at Valleydale Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL. Jane grew up in Mtn. Brook and graduated from Mtn. Brook High School in May, 1977 in the top 10%. She took tap and Jaz dance lessons for 16 years, played the piano, Clarinet and later took u playing the mandolin. During football season in high school Jane was the Feature Twirler and did charity work during the holidays by performing at various nursing homes for "shut-ins" to make their holiday brighter. Jane also appeared on Micky Mouse Show on Saturdays at th Alabama Theater. She also appeared on Cousin Cliff's television program when she was a child. Jane and her sister were known as "the Kerlin Sisters" and they performed tap dances during the Christmas Holidays especially at the Downtown Dinner Club in Birmingham. Jane was a member of the debate Club, Latin Club, worked on the schools newspaper, member of the "Tri-Ettes" a service club, as well as, President of her high school sorority: Delta Theta Delta, Jane also had the ability to draw what she saw. She was a person with many talents.
Jane attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa her freshman year and transferred to Jacksonville State University in her second year of college. She was a Phi Mu. Jane graduated from Jacksonville State University in June, 1981 with a B.S. Degree. Afterwards she worked for the Gadsden Times selling ads for a short time. Then she obtained a job with Marvin's Building Supply, Gadsden, AL as an Assistant Advertising Director. Jane remained in this position for three years before enrolling in the University of Alabama's School of nursing, Birmingham, AL Jane received her license to practice nursing as a registered nurse in March, 1987. Later on, at her father's request, she took the Dale Carnegie Training and upon graduating she received "Best of Class" award. As an R.N., she has worked at The University of Alabama Hospital, Health South Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital, all in Birmingham, AL.
Visitation will be from 5;00 p.m. until 7;00 p.m. on Monday, November 27th at Jefferson Memorial. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, November 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East in Trussville. Dr. Bryant Strain is officiating. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity or animal shelter/clinic in her memory. Jefferson Memorial is directing.
