Sept. 29, 1947- Oct. 9, 2014 Leland Cherry McCaslin was born at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas to Lt. Col. James K. McCaslin, Sr. and Janie Cherry McCaslin. As an "Army Brat", he lived in many places throughout the US and Europe. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a B.S. in Communications, and obtained his Army commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps. On active duty in 1969, he was promoted to First Lieutenant and served in various locations in the US as a Special Agent in Counterintelligence. In 1973, he entered the Civil Service and served at the Pentagon until 1976. In 1979, he arrived in Heidelberg, Germany where he actively participated in the Cold War. While overseas, he acquired a M.Ed. from Boston University. He retired in 1995 as Chief of Security, Counterintelligence, US Army Europe and moved to Trussville, AL. After retirement, he taught speech at several local colleges. With his background in Security and Intelligence, he worked as a Contract Investigator for ICE with 9/11 related duties. After a stroke in 2005, he became a published author of "Secrets of the Cold War". He was a patriot until the end and loved his country. His sense of humor and integrity will be missed by all who knew him. Upon retirement he became a member of Deerfoot Baptist Church; Trussville, AL. His recent membership was at Central Baptist Church; Argo, AL. since it reminded him of the Baptist Church in Germany. He was a member of MOAA, American Legion, and other organizations related to the military. Leland was preceded in death by his mother and father. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Shewmaker McCaslin; Brother (Ret.) Lt. Col. James K. McCaslin, Jr. (Ginny) of Jacksonville, FL. and a host of nieces and nephews. Donations can be made to your favorite charity. Visitation will be held on Monday October 13 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, with a service to follow at 1:00 PM. Burial will take place in the Field of Honor at Jefferson Memorial.
