Kathryn Stroud

Kathryn Rush Griffin Stroud died peacefully on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at the age of 83. She was born in Chelsea on January 2, 1932 to John and Clarke Griffin. She graduated from high school in Senatobia, MS. She attended Birmingham-Southern College, from which she graduated in 1951. In May of 1952, she married Thomas F. Stroud. Kathryn worked for Standard Oil Company, then Protective Life Insurance Company, where she was one of their first computer programmers. Kathryn worked for 30 years at Protective, ultimately becoming a 2nd Vice President. She was passionate about her church, East Lake United Methodist Church, and served in many capacities there, as well as singing in the choir. Kathryn was an avid volunteer around town, including tutoring, reading regularly for the Alabama Radio Reading Service, and ushering for the Alabama Symphony. She loved to learn, and for the last few years (including this fall) was re-enrolled at her alma mater, B-SC, in religion and philosophy courses. Kathryn was predeceased by her husband, Tom, her parents, and older brother, John Sanders Griffin. She is survived by her younger sister, Mary Griffin Pitner, her daughter, Lindsay Kathryn Stroud Pitts (Bert), all in Birmingham, and her granddaughters, Kathryn Brennan Pitts (Nashville) and Margaret Carolyn Pitts (Oxford, MS); nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a loving mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and church. Visitation will occur Friday, December 11, 2015, from 5-7pm at Jefferson Memorial in Trussville. Kathryn's Celebration of Life Service will be this Saturday, December 12, 2015, 11am, at East Lake United Methodist Church, with interment following at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
