Julia K. Brock, 88, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away at home on August 26, 2018. She was born on April 9, 1930 in Brewton, Alabama to Samuel Lewis Koone and Vera Mae Cooper Koone. Julia lived her early life in Monroeville and Thomasville, Alabama. She then moved with her family to Birmingham where they lived in East Lake. As a young girl attending 85th Street Baptist Church, Julia accepted Christ as her Savior. Julia finished Robinson Elementary and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1948. Following high school, she began her career as a secretary at John Hancock Insurance and later, Air Engineers. On April 18, 1954, Julia married Robert William Brock (Bob) whom she met while taking dance at Arthur Murray Studios, where Bob was an instructor. She continued to work until the birth of her children, son Robert Steven Brock and daughter Juli Dianne Brock. In 1959, the family moved to the Huffman area of Birmingham where she resided until 2016. Julia returned to work following the sudden death of her husband in 1970, working part-time at General American Life Insurance Co and East End Insurance Co. She quit work again to take care of her beloved son, Steve, until his passing after his courageous battle with cancer. In 1978, Julia returned to the secretarial career in which she both loved and excelled, this time as a secretary for the City of Birmingham. She worked for the City until her retirement in 1993 from her final position as a secretary in the Mayor’s office. In retirement, Julia traveled with church group friends, aka “The Golden Girls”. She lived an active life volunteering in the church office and taking classes at Jefferson State Community College. Julia was a member of several churches in her life including Eastside Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Center Point and had recently joined Lakeside Baptist Church. Julia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her son Steve, her sisters Dorothy Greene, Vera Creel, Ernestine Hart, Mary Kennon, Janice Royster, and her brother Samuel Koone, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Juli Brock Schauer (Jimmy), her sister Marjorie Copus, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. Through all her trials and tribulations including three bouts with cancer, Julia displayed a joyful, happy spirit grounded in her strong Faith. Julia never met a stranger and loved to talk, earning her the nicknames “Jukebox” or “Juke” from her father who claimed she never “wound down”. Julia shared a special bond with her daughter, Juli. They loved to shop, travel, and spend time together. Julia will be missed by her family and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday August 31, 2018 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM with a funeral service at 2:00 pm at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville.
