Joyce Myers Pettis

January 31, 1932 — January 28, 2021

Joyce Myers Pettis passed away peacefully on January 28, 2021. She loved feeding hummingbirds and cardinals, collecting pink depression glass, and watching the neighborhood from her front porch swing. She was born in Nauvoo, Alabama, on January 31, 1932. As a young woman, she worked for U S Steel for many years. Following her marriage to Howard Lollar, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she raised her two children. When she was widowed, she returned to Birmingham, where she spent many years working for the Vestavia Hills School District and the US Postal Service. She married Kenneth Pettis in 1986, and they lived happily for 32 years (excluding the day of the annual Alabama/Ole Miss football game) until his death in January, 2020. She was a long-time member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, and later Huffman United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed working weekly with Eastern Area Christian Ministries. She recently moved to Somerby Senior Living in Hoover. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grady and Elizabeth Myers; her only sibling, Howard Thomas Myers; and her husbands, Howard William Lollar and Kenneth Roy Pettis. She is survived by her children, Lisa (Timothy) Meier, Jeffrey Lollar; her step-sons, William and Robert (RaeAnne) Lollar; her grandchildren, Katherine and Daniel (Amy) Ackerman; Matthew, Michael, Phillip, Michael, David, Diana, and David Lollar; nephews Michael and Richard Myers, and Brant (Paula) Pettis; niece Kay Stewart; and many old friends and neighbors. Service will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at 3:00 pm at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastern Area Christian Ministries.
