COLLINS, JOSEPH THOMAS June 2, 1924 May 4, 2013 Joe was born in Pittsburg, PA, the youngest of seven children, to Irish immigrants Thomas and Julia Collins. He is survived by his wife Phyllis, son Mark Collins (Nita Collins), Daughter Teresa Collins Dorn (John Dorn), son Mike Collins and grandchildren Kiefer Collins and Ashley Dorn. Joe spent his twentieth birthday on a ship waiting to hit the beach at Omaha as part of the D Day invasion of WWII. After the war he earned his college degree and took a job with Rust Engineering, helping to open their Birmingham division. He was a very religious man and a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church. He loved his family, playing golf and bridge, sitting on his porch swing and spending time with his grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 1591 Gadsden Hwy on Monday, May 6 from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 7921 First Ave N on Tuesday, May 7, visitation will be at 10 am with a funeral mass to follow at 11. Burial will be conducted by the Veterans Administration with an honor guard at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the Monsignor Eugene O'Connor School Endowment Fund.
