Joseph Charles Castleberry, Sr. was born in Anniston, Al and lived in the southeast most of his life between Birmingham, Anniston, Cropwell AL and Blue Ridge GA. In summer 1945, Charlie enlisted in the U.S. Army and after boot camp he was deferred until further notice. He began working at Mack Truck Birmingham with his brother, Jack. In 1947, he began his career at the Alabama Power Company (APCo). In the early 1970's, he patented a hydrolic booster used for repairing high tension wire. He retired from APCo in 1988. In September 1950, he was reactivated with the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean War. He served in Greenland and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the war, he reobtained his job at APCo. He attended and graduated from Howard College on the GI Bill and he was inducted into the fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi. He met and married Virginia and fathered three children- Joseph, Donna and Amelia. He remarried in 1966 to Sue A. Able. They were happily married for 44 years before her passing in late 2009. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Center Point, AL. After retirement, Charlie and Sue traveled throughout the world. The most memorable trips were to Australia 1996 and Europe in 2000. He was an avid gardener and supplied tomatoes, peppers, and okra to his friends and family until 2012. Special thanks to the staff at Covenant Woods and Hope Hospice for the "good help". Visitation will be Wednesday from 5pm until 7pm. Chapel services will be held on Thursday at Noon with burial in Coosa Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
