John Russell Shirley of Birminham, AL went home to be with the Lord and his beloved wife on Monday at the age of 94. He was a member of Crestway Baptist Church where he was baptized. He worked dillegently in the Church, helping to set up their sound system and working in the kitchen along with his beloved wife preparing meals for numerous events. He was a member of Builders for Christ, where he traveled to many states and several countries, helping to re-build churches and homes destroyed by weather events. He was employed by Southern Bell, a.k.a. AT&T, for 50+ years, working his way up to be an engineer before retiring. He served in the military during WWII and the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Shirley, and his son, Wayne Shirley. He is survived by his daughter, Diann Capps (Cliff) of Birmingham; sister, Raiford Jones, of Spanish Fort, AL; grandchildren, Chris Capps (Donna), of Chelsea, Craig Capps (Ann), of Trussville, Stacey Tucker (Johnny), of Argo; great-grandchildren, Jason Rohm, Jared Rohm, Jordan Capps, Jackson Capps, Lexi Key, Austin Tucker, Zach Tucker, Meaghan Tucker; nieces, Marsha Ceravolo (Vince), of Pleasant Grove, Christie Bate (Steve), of Clay, Lisa Stewart (Jonathan), of Chelsea, and Jennifer Villafranco (Vince), of Orlando, FL. Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 9 at 2pm at Crestway Baptist Church. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville.
