John Monroe Joyner, age 79 of Odenville, AL, passed away on May 30, 2024. Mr. Joyner was born March 28, 1945 in Savannah, GA. He is preceded in death by his parents Mamie Taylor Shirah Joyner and John J.Joyner; brother, Herman Rudolph Shirah, Sr.,and sister, Evelyn Joyner Finn.
John graduated from H.V. Jenkins High School in Savannah, GA. After graduating high school, John joined the U.S. Air Force, serving as Staff Sargent with the A&E Squadron in Columbus, MS 1964-1968. Upon release from the military, he settled in Birmingham, AL building a career in the telecommunication field working with AT&T. After many years of service John retired as Supervisor over the Birmingham, AT&T, Digital Data Center.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathleen Herrick Joyner; daughter, Teresa L. Joyner; son, Richard S. (Angela) Joyner; granddaughters, Savannah C. Joyner and Ashlynn C. Joyner; grandson, Brannon Ty Joyner; niece, Kimberly Shirah Fowler; nephew, Herman Rudolph "Rudy" Shirah, Jr.; niece, Beatrice Herrick DeSmidt; niece, Mary Herrick Tuggle; nephew, William J. Herrick; niece, Elizabeth Herrick (David) Paine; nephew, Michael E. Herrick; nephew, J. Matthew Herrick. And many friends and family. Special thank you to the staff at Ascension at Home with Compassus, Comfort Keepers, Veteran's Administration Hospital Birmingham, and U.A.B., that helped the family through this time with John. Thanks to all the friends and memories made with the V.F.W., Springville, AL and Knights of Columbus of Pell City, AL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in John M. Joyner's name to be made to St.Theresa's Catholic Church, Leeds, AL Building Fund or any charity of your preference.
