John Wilson (Jack) Ferguson, age 91, passed away August 5, 2019. Mr. Ferguson was born August 15, 1927 in Birmingham, AL, where he lived all of his life. He served in World War II as a Fireman First Class in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater in the Harbor Patrol at U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as the Supply Sergeant for Company M. 167th Infantry 31st Division at Fort Jackson, S.C.
He attended Jackson Grammar School, West End High School, and Howard College. He was employed by the U. S. Postal Service after being discharged from the U.S. Army, where he worked for 40 years, serving as the Director of Customer Services at the Birmingham Post Office and Postmaster of the Bessemer office until his retirement on December 1, 1989.
He was a member of various organizations including the National Association Postmasters, the Bessemer Lions Club, and the National Guard of Alabama. He was an active member of the East Lake United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Stewards and various committees.
Mr.. Jack, as he was affectionately known to all, was preceded in death by his parents, Edna Kraemer Ferguson and Henry John Ferguson Sr., both natives of Louisiana; brothers Henry John Ferguson Jr, Wilbur Ferguson, and Harold Ferguson; and sisters Emelda Ferguson Frye Dodson, and Jeanette Mary Ferguson. He is survived by his wife Betty Jo Jones Ferguson; three daughters, Patricia Ferguson Wood (Steve), Rebecca Ferguson Anderson (Rick), Jacque Ferguson Cobb; grandchildren, Meredith Wood Jordan (Tyler), John Wood, Jordan Anderson (Lu Qin), Lindsey Cobb (Rachel), and Matthew Anderson (Lindsey); one sister, Charlotte Ferguson Foley (Milton); and special nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The memorial service for John Ferguson will be Thursday August 15 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville. The family will receive friends at 11:00 AM with the Celebration of Life Service at noon. The family is so appreciative for the kind and caring staff at Fair Haven’s third floor assisted living facility. Angels all! In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to Oasis Hospice, Wounded Warrior Project, or a favorite charity.
