Jerry Savage

May 14, 1948 — October 6, 2021

Jerry Wayne Savage of Birmingham, Alabama passed from this earthly life on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 2:22 a.m. He leaves behind a legacy of abundant joy and powerful impact. He touched every person he met with positivity, encouragement, love, and generosity.

Born in Orange, Texas on May 14, 1948, Jerry spent his childhood in south Louisiana—a detail of his life that he was undoubtedly proud of; he loved to tell people where he was from. As a teenager, he moved to Cotton Valley, Louisiana, where he graduated from Cotton Valley High School. There, he was admired among his peers, played football, and was named “Mr. Cotton Valley.” He graduated from David Lipscomb University with his Bachelor’s degree and Harding University with his Master’s degree.

Jerry held many professions throughout his life, including pastor, counselor, manager, referee, umpire, and sales representative. No matter his role, he chose careers that allowed him to connect with others on a daily basis. Jerry never met a stranger and truly loved to know others’ life stories. He was enthusiastic about others’ success, making him a fantastic leader and listener. When a volunteer or service opportunity arose, he was the first to raise his hand. He volunteered with nonprofits, the Homeowner’s Association, his church, and much more. Jerry was rare: he exemplified charisma, affection, and warmth while also harnessing an attitude of hard work and resilience.

He was a storyteller, a learner. He was vulnerable and open. He was a silly and playful “Papa” to his beloved grandchildren, and he supported them in everything they did. He was FUN.

To know Jerry was to know the true quintessence of love and acceptance.

To sit with Jerry was to sit with the embodiment of grace and understanding.

To talk with Jerry was to be authentically heard and seen.

He was extraordinary.

Jerry was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, a friend, and a mentor. He is preceded in death by his parents Pauline Frederick Durham Savage and Teddy Wilson Savage. He is survived by his adoring wife Sandra Brooks Jayne Savage; son Jerry Wayne Savage, Jr. (Jennifer); daughter Jana Savage Martin (Chad), daughter Mary Ashley Canevaro (Cameron); daughter Bethany Lynne Jayne; grandchildren Brody and Caroline Savage and Summer and Zane Martin; sisters Delores Anne Savage Leggett and Barbara Jean Savage Woodard; brother Kevin Lawrence Savage; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
