Jean Humphrey, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, of Birmingham, AL went to be with the Lord on November 24, 2013 after a brief illness. Jean loved, and faithfully served, the Lord with gladness in many ways, but mostly through the Briarwood Thrift Store which she began in 1970. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Hugh Humphrey, and her daughters, Leslie Brown (Jim), and Alyson Gully (Tim), and by grandchildren, Erin Frizzell (Bubba), Will Tumlin (Sara), Wynston Gully, Holden Gully, and Steadman Gully, also her sister Diana Ash (Mike), and brother, Farris Spradling (Sarah). Jean graduated from West End High School in 1947. She married Hugh Humphrey on September 3, 1949 and came to reside in the Cahaba Heights area. In the 1960's, Jean began the Rummage Room Thrift Store in her home for the community in need. From there, it grew and eventually became the Briarwood Thrift Store. For 50 years, she was able to share the love and saving grace of Jesus Christ with hundreds of people, all the while providing for their needs with food, clothing, and anything else needed. Her ministry and legacy leaves a huge impact on the lives of her family and the thousands in her community she touched. But more than anything, she loved her Savior, Jesus Christ. She will be missed by so many, especially her family. A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Briarwood Presbyterian Church at 1:00pm on Tuesday, November 26, 2013.
