Jan Lowery

June 7, 1943 — November 25, 2023

 

Janet (Jan) Cook Lowery of Birmingham, AL passed away peacefully at home on November 25, 2023.  She was born in Birmingham, Al on June 7, 1943, to Evelyn and Wilburn I. Cook.  Jan was raised in East Lake and graduated from Banks High School, where she was the first Homecoming Queen.

 

Jan married the love her of life, James L (Jakie) Lowery in 1960.  They were married for over 62 years.  Jan was baptized at an early age at Ruhama Baptist Church.  She was proud of her Christian faith and was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. 

 

While raising her children, Jan was on the executive board of the AFWA (Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs) from 1973 through 1979. She later worked at Baptist Medical Center Montclair where she was the president at the BMC Montclair Auxiliary from 1993 to 1995.

 

After her husband’s job transfer, Jan lived in Powell, Ohio for a few years before moving back to Birmingham where she went to work for Stein Mart in a newly created position as their Boutique Manager. Jan loved to travel and had the opportunity to travel to several countries mostly with her husband, sister, and brother-in-law.

 

Jan was a beautiful, kind, and giving person, that always had a smile on her face and a positive word of encouragement to all.

She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, devoted friend, sister, and sister-in-law.  Not only will she be missed by her family, but also the many friends she had.

Family, laughter, and music was a huge part of her life.

 

Jan was preceded in death by her husband, James L (Jakie) Lowery, her parents; father Wilburn Cook and stepmother, Jesse Cook, Her mother Evelyn Cook, and stepbrother Bill Clifton.

She is survived by sister, Judy Tarrant (Frank) of Birmingham; daughter, Leigh Ann Motley (Buddy) of Birmingham; son, Chris Lowery (Kim) of Birmingham; grandchildren, Jennifer Motley of Trussville, Kadie Motley (Doug) of Vincent, and Joseph Motley of Trussville; great grandchildren, Tyler Hayes of Trussville, and Brooklyn Albanese of Vincent.

 

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with a service to follow at 2:00 pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville.  The family will have private burial to follow.

 

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions to be made to Alzheimer’s Association 1-800-272-3900; www.Act.alz.org in memory of Jan.
