Doug Whatley

June 14, 1941 — October 25, 2024

Graveside Services for Mr. Doug Whatley, age 83 of Clay, will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens with Bro. Dexter Taylor officiating.

Doug Whatley, age 83, went home to his lord and Savior October 25, 2024, at his home in Clay, Alabama. He was born in Birmingham, AL on June 14, 1941, to Reginald and Lucile Whatley. He grew up in Eastlake and graduated in 1959 from Woodlawn High School.

After a short time at Auburn University, Doug worked at a bank in downtown Birmingham. He met Mary Elizabeth Flowers in 1962 and they were married in August of that year. They welcomed their first child the following summer and added three more children over the next five years.

Doug began working as a draftsman at O’Neal Steel in 1962 and completed drafting school in the early years of marriage. He worked for 47 years for multiple employers first as a draftsman and later as a structural designer.

Doug loved the Lord and his family. He was devoted to Bible study and prayer. He enjoyed family picnics, tending his yard and growing plants, and making homemade yeast rolls. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he was a good friend to his neighbors. Doug was an honest, hard-working, compassionate man of integrity who always put others ahead of himself. He will be missed terribly, but we know he is finally well and at peace in his eternal home with Christ because of his personal relationship with the Lord. We will see him again one day!

Doug is preceded in death by his parents, Reginald Douglas Whatley and Mary Lucile Tyson Whatley.

Survivors include: his wife of 62 years – Mary Elizabeth Whatley; his children – Pam McDanal (Hayden), Allison Russell (Tommy), Craig Whatley (Debbie), and Cathey Glasscox (Travis); twelve grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren plus one due in January.

Doug had a heart for the people of Israel, so in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to FIRM at firmisrael.org.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 from 12:30 P.M. until 1:30 P.M. at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home.
