SUTLEY, JAMES ALBERT, age 90, of Jacksons Gap, AL, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014. He was devoted to his church and his family, and was a loyal friend. He possessed strength of character, gentleness and goodness of spirit, and was a model for how a human life should be lived. Preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Thelma Nix Sutley, and parents, Grady Lee and Gladys Sutley; survived by daughter, Judy (Jerry) Shadrick of Montgomery, sons, Mike (Kaye) Sutley of Birmingham and Marty (Shelia) Sutley of Prattville; grandchildren, Jerre Lynne (Thomas) Borland of New Iberia, LA, Jeff (Stacy) Shadrick of Vestavia Hills, Lauren (Jeremy) Calloway, Brady Sutley and Haley Sutley of Prattville, AL; great grandchildren, Wesley Borland, Audrey Borland, Riley Shadrick, Payton Shadrick, Landry Calloway, Cooper Calloway, Catesby Calloway and Press Calloway; and a host of other family members and friends. He graduated from McAdory High School in 1942, served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Raleigh, and retired from U.S. Steel after 42 years of service as an inspector. He also served as a member of the Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, as a consultant for U.S. Steel, as Vice-President of Clay Senior Citizens, Inc., and as Director of the Jefferson County C.A.R.T.S. program. The family thanks the nurses and staff of Chapman Healthcare in Alexander City for their care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Services will be held Thursday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens Trussville. Dr. Jerry Curry officiating. Visitation one hour prior to services. Burial to follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
