James Hartline

February 27, 1933 — April 11, 2018

James Maril Hartline, 85, of Chalkville, AL, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at St. Vincent’s East Hospital. Known simply as “Maril” or “PawPaw” by family and “Mr. James” by friends, he lived a full life of love and simple pleasures. He enjoyed family, finding bargains at Aldi, weekend pancakes at Burger King and his morning biscuit at Hardee’s with friends. Mr. Hartline served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and had a successful 30-year career as a civil engineer for the Alabama Department of Transportation. He is preceded in death by Martha Winn Hartline, his wife of 47 years, who passed away October 13, 2006; a brother, William Hartline of Anniston; and parents Louis and Stella Mae Hartline of Steele. He is survived by two sons and their families: Michael Hartline (Marsha) of Tallahassee, FL and granddaughters Meghan, Madison and Mallory Hartline; and Steve Hartline of Pinson and grandsons Seth Cain (Mesha) of McCalla and Austin Hartline of Pinson. He is also survived by a sister, Leois Smith, and a brother, Larry Hartline (Vickie), both of Steele. The family will receive visitors on Friday, April 13 from 12pm to 1pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 1591 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235. Interment in the Jefferson Memorial Mausoleum will occur immediately afterward.
