James Earl Coggins
April 9, 1931- April 6, 2015
James Earl Coggins, a long-time resident of the Birmingham area, passed away on April 6, 2015. He was born in Chilton County, Alabama as one of thirteen children to Walter Leonard Coggins and Georgia Elisabeth Mullins who preceded him in death. He is preceded in death by nine of his siblings: Julian Chester Coggins, George Winston Coggins, Bernie Wendall Coggins, Bessie Anita Williamson, Emma Lorene Mims, Mattie Louise Todd, Earline Cleckler, Mildred Francis Jackson, and Alice Adele Burgett. He began working in 1950 with VJ Elmore and left there in 1966 to work with Liberty National until his retirement in 1996. He was blessed with the ability to fix anything and used this gift to help many people in service to the Lord. He served many years at Lakewood Baptist Church where he was an ordained deacon. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Moody at the time of his death. He was known and loved by many, including his family. He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Dorothy Jeanette Prophitt, sons Gary (Marsha) Coggins and Terry (Jo Anne) Coggins, and daughter Sherri (Jimmy) Griffis, six grandchildren Robin (Glen) Calvert, Krista Coggins, Erika (Joel) Watkins, Kimberly Griffis, Chandler Griffis, and Dylan Griffis, and two great grandchildren Madison McCoy, and Peyton Watkins. He is also survived by three brothers Bobby Gene (Betty) Coggins, Harold (Naomi) Coggins, and Leonard (Shirley) Coggins. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery and Gardens on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 2:00 PM with visitation before the service beginning at 12:30 PM. A graveside service will follow for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Moody, 902 Church Street, Moody, Alabama 35004.
