James Edward Brake, affectionately known as Uncle Red, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 25, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Mildred Brake; his siblings, Estelle Brake Teal and William Brake; and his niece, Mary Sue Teal. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Velma Sue Brake Bailey;his nieces, Karen Brake Glenn (Gary) and Polly Teal Shields (Jimmy); his nephews, Billy Brake, Jack Brake, John Teal (Natasha), Randy Brake (Junko); and other dear family members and friends. He graduated from Howard College (now Samford University). He served his country in World War II and was honorably discharged. He was retired from Alabama By Products (Drummond, Inc.) and the YMCA. James Edward was a loving and generous member of Huffman United Methodist Church. He attended the Friendship Sunday School Class. He loved the church choir and he sang in it for over 50 years. He also served as a volunteer with the Auxiliary of St. Vincent's East. A celebration of James Edward's life will be held at Huffman United Methodist Church on Monday, October 28, 2019, with Senior Pastor Ed Sims officiating. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. and the service at 10:00 a.m. with burial at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Huffman United Methodist Church Choir, 711 Gene Reed Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35235.
