Mr. James Dewey Barker, Sr., age 81, of Birmingham, passed away on May 13, 2015, at St. Matins In The Pines. He graduated from Irondale Elementary School where he was the first person to receive a National honor Society pin. He attended Shades Cahaba School and graduated from Shades Valley High School where he lettered in track and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was Vice-president of his graduating class. It was during the Korean War that he joined the U.S. Navy. He served in Puerto Rico as an MP and then aboard the AM 210 Revenge mine sweeper. He served his time with achievement and was Honorably discharged. Upon returning home, he enrolled at Howard College and later Samford University. He worked at Lamson & Sessions Fastener Corporation as Sales Manager. He later joined Steel City Bolt & Screw as Vice-President of Sales where he worked until he retired. He was a member of Huffman Baptist church for fifty years where he served as usher, Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Louis Barker and Mary Ann Barker; and his brother and sister-in-law, Charles Clifton Barker and Myra Barker. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Barker; his son, James Dewey Barker, Jr. (Libbra) of Gulf Breeze, FL; 2 wonderful grandsons, Ryley and Micah Barker; his brother, Donald Barker (Linda) of Saraland, AL; brother-in-law, Herbert Smith (Sherwyn) of Clovis, NM, sister-in-law, Virginia Joyce Carlee of Birmingham and many nieces, nephews and other family members. A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 3:00pm at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the graveside service. Dr. Larry Wimberly and Rev. Larry Smith will be officiating over the services. Jefferson Memorial Trussville directing.
