Hugh Marlin

February 29, 1936 — June 10, 2018

Hugh Marlin, age 82 of Springville, AL passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 10, 2018. Hugh is survived by his three children, Laura Sellers (Jason) of Atlanta, GA, Andrew Marlin (Jane Marie) of Homewood, AL and Tom Marlin (Nina) of Columbus, MS; his sister Sandra Shapard; and his five granddaughters. He is preceded in death by his wife Betty Marlin, and his sister Rebecca Marlin Cook of Tupelo, MS. Hugh was born February 29, 1936 in Tupelo, MS to Homer T. and Mamie Sims Marlin. He lived most of his early life in Tupelo but also lived briefly in Oakridge, TN and Blairsville, GA. Hugh graduated from Mississippi State University in 1959 with a degree in civil engineering. He was commissioned in 1959 as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served on active duty until 1960. After college Hugh moved to Birmingham, AL. It was here where he met and married his wife of 50 years, Betty. Hugh and Betty raised three children together. He was a caring, supportive and steady father and loved nothing more than spending time with his children and later his grandchildren. Hugh’s career as an engineer started after moving to Birmingham working briefly for Alabama Power then with a Birmingham based consulting firm where he worked until his retirement in 2002. After his retirement, he moved to Springville, AL. He embraced his new town joining the Springville United Methodist Church, serving on his neighborhood HOA board, and volunteering to serve on the town’s Planning and Zoning Committee. He later ran for city councilman for the town of Springville, and served multiple terms in that capacity. Hugh was an avid sports fan especially Mississippi State football, basketball and baseball as well as Atlanta Braves baseball. His hobbies included reading, woodworking, and movies. Services will be at 10am on Friday, June 15, 2018 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, June 14, 2018 from 5pm to 7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Clair Sav-A-Life PO Box 435 Springville, AL 35146, Navigators Military Ministries www.navigators.org or your favorite library.
