Herbert Whitfield, 87, beloved brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather, took his final earthly breath on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Born on March 6, 1936 in Birmingham, AL to Earl and Blanche Whitfield, Whit was one of five children. He served in the USMC from 1953-1957. After his time in the service, he settled back in Birmingham where he married his sweetheart, Barbara Gilbert, in 1971. They formed a perfectly imperfect blended family. As an adult, Whit traveled extensively for work which fostered a life-long love of travel that continued throughout his life. He and Barbara loaded up their
RV and spent many years touring the United States. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Earl, David, and Paul, and his wife, Barbara. Herbert is survived by his sister Elizabeth, his sons Jim (Tammy), Keith (Phyllis), and Randy (Tracy) and his daughters Kathy Lane (Dale), Carla Herrold (Sean), and Cheri Grabany (Terry), his granddaughters Brandy Shotts (Danny), Crystalyn Stembridge (Adam), Amanda Coalson (Daniel), Candace Henderson, Amber Brown (Justin), Whitney Dillard (Allen), Kali Whitfield, Jessica Jordan, Samantha Staggs (Clint), Shannon Miranda (James), Crystal Roberts, Allison Buck (Chris), Cory Townsend (Caleb), and Lindsey Weller (William), his grandsons Jimmy Dunn (Kimberly) and Joshua Lane, his twenty six great grandchildren, and his one great-great grandchild. The family of Whit would like to extend the greatest of gratitude to the faculty and staff of Col. Robert L. Howard Veterans Home in Pell City, AL for their wonderful care and compassion.
